The timpani is commonly referred to as a kettle drum and is made up of the drum head on top of a large bowl. The timpani uses a special drum stick called a timpani mallet to produce sound. The timpani was first introduce in the late 1800s and had evolved from military drums, originally having a wooden frame. The timpani has a loud, vibrating sound and is used in many different ensembles, like concert, marching, and rock bands, as well as having been a part of orchestras for a long time.
