(String instrument)
The violin is the highest-pitched string instrument that consists of 4 strings (sometimes 5) and a wooden body. Players produce sound by drawing a bow at different angles and different strings, but can also pluck the strings to create sound as well. The modern violin dates back to 16th-century Italy but it is related to an old 3-stringed North African instrument called a rebab. It has also been the template of some other similar instruments, like the viola. Violins are extremely important instruments in Western classical music, but can also be played in folk or country music. There are even electric violins used in rock music.
